We all know that in some situations more reach is better for desired composition. Real 400mm and 600mm lens can be way too expensive for some of us. However, using shorter lens equipped with 2x teleconverter (as well as 1.4x TC) can produce satisfying results when it comes to image quality.
EF 200 2.8L and EF 300 2.8L (as example) can easily take 2x teleconverters without losing too much image quality. I have now used these both lens with and without teleconverters and Im quite pleased. Using teleconverter slows down the autofocusing speed noticeably, but not that much though - these are still able to track moving subjects (using Servo AF) in good light conditions. For static objects, no matter if focusing speed drops from 0.2sec down to 0.7sec or so.. photo can be taken anyway. When it gets even darker, AF can be hunting back and forth - its time to get off that TC and continue shooting with large aperture f/2.8 lens.
Real life image quality? Yes, I think someone will be asking for 100% crops etc. pixel peeping stuff. Im not going to that here but what I do know, both combinations (300mm and 200mm w/2x tc) will produce good enough IQ wide open for most purposes, and very good IQ stopped down to about f/7.1-f/8.0.
Real life sample images (EOS 5D):
EF 300 2.8L + 2x TC @ f/5.6
EF 200 2.8L II + 2x TC @ f/5.6
